Short answer

What a radon laboratory does

A radon laboratory supplies passive test devices and analyzes them after they have been exposed in a home. Use a device from a qualified laboratory.

You can order a test kit by mail from a qualified radon measurement provider or laboratory. A passive device is exposed to the air in the home for a set time, then sent to the laboratory for analysis. Results come back within a few days or weeks; if you need them quickly, ask how long they will take and whether expedited service is available.

Laboratories stand behind professional testing too. The ANSI/AARST quality assurance standard, MS-QA-2023, sets minimum requirements for the quality systems of qualified professionals and laboratories whose data are used to decide whether mitigation is needed, or whether it worked. For a private well, MW-RN-2020 covers collecting, transporting and measuring water samples; see radon in water.

Credentials

How radon laboratories are credentialed

  • NRPP

    Approved Laboratories

The National Radon Proficiency Program publishes a list of NRPP Approved Laboratories, and a list of approved devices.

  • NRSB

    Accredited Radon Laboratory

The National Radon Safety Board accredits laboratories, and a professional who reads their own electret devices must become an NRSB Accredited Laboratory.

  • State

    State certification

Some states certify laboratories as well as testers and mitigators. Pennsylvania's Radon Services Directory, which Radon411 reads, lists certified laboratory firms beside testing and mitigation firms.

The directory

Laboratories by state

37 laboratories are listed, each from the state list it was read from.

Only states with listings of their own are in the table. Every state has its own page, with its licensing rule: choose it on the map or in the search above.

Do it yourself

Sending a kit so the result counts

Your state may be able to give you a list of do-it-yourself devices from qualified laboratories.

  1. Choose

Use a qualified device and follow the laboratory's instructions.

  2. Start

Record the start time and date when you set the test out.

  3. Stop

When it ends, record the stop time and date, and reseal the package.

  4. Send

Return it immediately to the lab named on the package, and ask how long results take.

To check a laboratory, look for it on NRPP's approved list, ask whether NRSB accredits it, and check your state's list where your state certifies laboratories. A kit's product page here says whether the laboratory fee is included; compare kits.

How these listings are verified

  • Listed by state registry

This business appears on a state's published list of licensed radon professionals, which Radon411 read directly from the state's own site. The business has not confirmed these details itself.

  • Claimed profile

The business confirmed these details itself. Radon411 has not independently checked them against an official record.

  • Business information verified

Radon411 checked this business's details against an official record, such as a state contractor registry. This is a business status. It does not mean any specific certification has been verified, see each certification below for that.

  • Certification verified

Radon411 retrieved this credential directly from the issuing body's own record and confirmed it matches this business.

  • Not yet verified

The business, or a public list that names it, reports this credential. Radon411 has not checked it against the issuing body's own record, so treat it as self-reported until it is.

  • Unverified

This business's details come from a public list and have not yet been checked by Radon411 or confirmed by the business itself.

Questions

Common questions

What does a radon lab do?

It supplies test devices and analyzes them once they have been exposed in a home and sent back.

How do I know a radon lab is certified?

Check NRPP's list of approved laboratories, ask whether NRSB accredits it, and check your state's list where your state certifies laboratories.

How long do lab results take?

Within a few days or weeks. Ask the lab, and request expedited service if you need it.

Can a lab test my well water for radon?

Water is measured under its own protocol, ANSI/AARST MW-RN-2020, which covers collecting and transporting samples. Ask the laboratory whether it analyzes water.
