State radon programs

Every U.S. state and DC runs, or designates, a radon program. Each entry below shows only what that program's own page stated when Radon411 read it, and the date it was read.

What “checked” means here

50 of 51 programs were checked against the state's own page on September 25, 2026: the page EPA's state radon contacts list links for that state, fetched and read as published. Each fact below is the page's own sentence, and anything the page did not state is marked as not stated. A check records what the page said that day; it is not an endorsement of the program. 1 could not be read, and each says why.

State radon programs vary: some run their own testing and kit programs, some designate the work to a health or environmental agency or a university, and requirements around licensing, disclosure and certification differ by state. Program pages change, so check a detail on the state's own page before you rely on it.

Questions people ask

Is radon testing required in my state?

Testing is recommended for every home below the third floor, but whether it is legally required depends on your state and local rules and on the terms of a home sale. Some states require disclosure of radon information to buyers, specific testing protocols, or licensed radon professionals.

Is a radon test required?

Do sellers have to disclose radon?

EPA's guide ties radon disclosure to state or local government requirements, and rules vary by state, so start with your state radon program. Whatever the rule, EPA's advice is to share: give buyers your test results and the records of any radon fix.
