The AMG Maverick is an AC inline radon fan made by Festa, a Pennsylvania company, and sold on its own or with Festa's 4 inch or 3 inch installation kit. Festa's 2022 catalog lists it at 260 CFM with no resistance, a maximum pressure of 2.21 inches of water column and 66 W, and Festa's installation instructions say it can be mounted indoors or outdoors.

What you get

Festa's product page offers the Maverick as the fan only or with a 4 inch or a 3 inch installation kit. It lists the kit as two white Fernco couplers that fit the fan to either 3 inch or 4 inch PVC pipe, a green 5.5 inch radon system manometer, a line cord with connector and system labels. For the fan alone, the package contents are not stated by the maker; the page says the fan is white and fits 4 inch Fernco couplers, sold separately.

How it works

In our words, from the maker's documents

A radon fan is the part of an active soil depressurization system that runs all the time. The EPA's guide describes the vent fan drawing radon gas from below the home through the suction pipes and releasing it to the outdoor air, while creating a negative pressure or vacuum under the slab. The fan has to keep running for the system to work.

Two numbers describe what a fan can do. Static pressure, in inches of water column, is how hard it pulls against the resistance of the soil and the pipe; airflow, in cubic feet per minute, is how much air it moves. Airflow falls as pressure rises, which is why Festa prints a row of airflow figures at rising pressures for each fan, and a mitigator matches that row to the suction a house needs.

For the Maverick, Festa's 2022 catalog lists 115 V, 60 Hz, 66 W, a maximum of 0.59 A, 2450 RPM, a 4 inch Fernco size and a weight of 8.2 lbs. Its airflow figures start at 260 CFM with no resistance and reach zero at 2.21 inches of water column, and Festa's fan selection chart lists it as a primary fan for homes up to about 2,200 square feet over soil that is not compact, with the Prowler as the high suction choice. Festa's RRNC fan types page repeats two points from that row under its AC fan models: 201 CFM at 0.5 inch and 116 CFM at 1.0 inch.

Festa describes how the AMG fans are built. Its catalog says the motors are made and engineered in Germany by EBM-Papst, the compression molded housings are made in Ohio and designed to be air and water tight, with the two halves locked by silicone and an industrial adhesive, and each fan is assembled in Pennsylvania. Wiring uses lever nuts that come already attached. Festa's installation instructions add that the motor is protected by an internal overheat device.

The Maverick has no speed control of its own that Festa describes. Its installation instructions for the AMG AC fans say not to use these fans with solid state speed controllers, with one exception for Canadian users, who may use only KB Electronics' KBMC-13BV control, except with the Extreme models. Festa sells the Maverick ECS separately as a speed control model, which it says lets a professional fine-tune airflow to match the installation.

Independent evidence

Who checks a device like this

C-NRPP's consumer evaluation covers electronic radon monitors, not mitigation fans, so it has no result for Festa AMG Maverick. The safety listing and performance certification the maker states are under “What the manufacturer says”, and what shows whether any fan is working in your home is a radon test after it is installed.

Festa states the warranty two ways. Its 2022 catalog calls it a Hassle Free 5 Year Full Replacement Warranty: a call to the office starts a claim, Festa brings back a fan a year old or less at its own expense, and for an older fan it asks only for the terminal box lid. Its RRNC page says all Festa AMG radon fans come with a 5 to 7 year no-cost manufacturer's warranty, and its Maverick ECS page says the extended 7 year term belongs to the AMG EC models, which the Maverick is not.

Festa's product page also says the buyer is responsible for choosing the correct fan, that unused returned merchandise carries a 15% restocking fee, and that its staff or its fan replacement guide can help with the choice.

What it costs to run

The running cost is electricity. The EPA's guide says the fan must run continuously, and Festa's 2022 catalog lists the Maverick at 66 W and a maximum of 0.59 A at 115 V, so your utility rate and those watts around the clock set the yearly figure.

Plan on replacing the fan at some point. The EPA's guide says fans may last five years or more and that manufacturer warranties tend not to exceed five years. Festa's FAQ says every active system is required to have a manometer and that equal oil levels mean the fan is not working properly, and the EPA suggests retesting at least every two years.

Airflow falls as the suction the system needs rises. A mitigator matches the fan to pressure measured under the slab.

Who it fits

Good fit if, and look elsewhere if

Good fit if

  • You or your mitigator are replacing a Maverick, or one of the fans Festa's 2022 replacement guide pairs with it, such as RadonAway's RP145 or XP201 or Fantech's Rn2.
  • Your system needs a 4 inch fan, and the airflow it needs at its measured suction falls within the figures Festa publishes for the Maverick.
  • Your house matches the use Festa names: a moderate-sized, newer home of 500 to 2,200 square feet over a porous sub-slab such as gravel.
  • You want the fan with Festa's own kit of two couplers, a manometer, a line cord and system labels in one order.

Look elsewhere if

  • Your sub-slab is a gravel-clay mix or tighter and needs more suction; Festa's catalog points to its Prowler for a step up in suction over the Maverick.
  • You want to turn the fan's speed up or down; Festa's instructions say not to use the Maverick with solid state speed controls, and Festa sells a separate Maverick ECS for that.
  • Your house is larger than about 2,200 square feet or needs more airflow; Festa's catalog names its Hawk as a step up in volume over the Maverick.
  • You are designing a first system yourself; the EPA recommends a qualified mitigation contractor, and Festa advises a certified and licensed radon mitigator for fan sizing and installation.

Installation

5 steps

  1. The EPA recommends that a qualified radon mitigation contractor fix a home, and notes that many states require radon professionals to be licensed, certified or registered. Festa's own RRNC page strongly advises hiring a certified and licensed radon mitigator for fan sizing and installation, and its installation instructions say installation work and electrical wiring must be done by qualified persons in line with all applicable codes and standards.
  2. Festa's instructions say the fan can be mounted vertically with the terminal box cover facing up, or horizontally with the terminal box drain hole facing down. It can sit directly on the piping or be fastened to a supporting structure; on a vertical pipe, the installer has to keep the pipe from sliding into the fan, and short duct runs ending within 60 inches of the fan need guards. Rigid pipe joins the fan's spigots through flexible connectors and clips suited to routine servicing and vibration isolation. Festa suggests following EPA recommendations when choosing where the fan goes, and its safety list says the fan must always vent outdoors and, because the impeller is unguarded, should not sit where people or animals can easily reach it.
  3. The supply has to match the rating label inside the terminal box cover, and Festa's catalog gives 115 V, 60 Hz. The instructions call for a double pole isolating switch with a contact separation of at least 1/8 inch (3 mm) and liquid tight flexible conduit to the terminal box, and say not to connect power until the fan is completely installed. Festa's kit adds a line cord with connector.
  4. Where the fan goes matters as much as which one. The EPA's construction guide says the fan and every positively pressurized part of the vent pipe belong outside habitable space, so a leak at the housing or a joint cannot push radon into the home, and that the fan should go in a vertical run of the vent pipe. Festa's AC fans page says these fans are typically mounted outside the home.
  5. After installation, Festa's instructions say to check that every duct connection is tight, to check the system vacuum with a manometer and keep it under the maximum recommended operating pressure, and to verify radon levels by testing to EPA protocol. The EPA's guide says an active system needs a warning device, usually a manometer, where it can be seen or heard, and a post-mitigation test within 30 days of installation, but no sooner than 24 hours after the system is running with the fan on.

Questions

Questions people ask

6 questions about the Festa AMG Maverick, answered

Asked about the AMG Maverick

How much air does the AMG Maverick move?

It depends on the suction your system needs. Festa's 2022 catalog gives this row in cubic feet per minute: 260 at 0 inches of water column, 201 at 0.5, 159 at 0.75, 116 at 1.0, 75 at 1.25, 40 at 1.5, 20 at 1.75 and 0 at 2.21 inches.

How loud is the AMG Maverick?

Festa gives an estimated range of 55 to 60 dB and says the figure can vary with the system configuration. It does not say at what distance that was measured.

Can the Maverick be installed outside?

Festa says yes: its instructions cover indoor and outdoor mounting, and its AC fans page says these fans usually go outside the home. For a horizontal mount, the instructions want the terminal box drain hole facing the ground.

Which fans does Festa say the Maverick replaces?

Festa's 2022 catalog replacement guide pairs the AMG Maverick or AMG Patriot with installed XP151, XP201, RP145, FR100, HP190, HP2190, RN2 and RN2SL fans. Festa's product page asks buyers to call or use its fan replacement guide, because choosing the correct fan is the buyer's responsibility.

What warranty does the Maverick have?

Festa's 2022 catalog gives its AMG fans a 5 year full replacement warranty. Its RRNC page speaks of 5 to 7 years across the AMG line, and its Maverick ECS page ties the 7 year term to the EC models. The Maverick is one of Festa's AC models, so the 5 year term is the one written for it; confirm the term with Festa when you buy.

Do I need a professional to install it?

For a new system, yes is the usual answer: the EPA recommends a qualified mitigation contractor and many states license or certify radon professionals, and Festa itself advises a certified and licensed mitigator for sizing and installation. Swapping a like-for-like fan still involves mains wiring, which Festa's instructions leave to a qualified person.
