The HOUND-1011S is a compact, portable radon detector from AEGTEST, a brand whose own store gives its home as Shenzhen, China: a semiconductor sensor, an LCD screen with data for the past 12 to 96 hours and a history of up to 504 days, and a built-in battery with a Type-C cable; the browser title of AEGTEST's product page also names audible and visual alarms. AEGTEST publishes no accuracy figure, operating range or manual for it, and it was not included in C-NRPP's 2024/25 consumer monitor evaluation.

What you get

AEGTEST lists one HOUND-1011S, a charging cable, a lanyard and a manual, and says the detector comes with a stand. The manual is in the box only: AEGTEST posts no copy online, and the general help page of its earlier store answered the question of where to find the instruction guide by asking buyers to contact the company. AEGTEST does not publish the size or weight of the HOUND-1011S.

How it works

In our words, from the maker's documents

AEGTEST describes the HOUND-1011S as a compact, portable radon detector for continuous monitoring, built around a high-precision semiconductor sensor. It does not say how air reaches the sensor, by diffusion or with a pump, so the sampling method is not stated by the maker. AEGTEST's earlier store gave a general account of how its detectors measure: the sensor counts the alpha particles of radon in each sample of air it analyzes, works continuously, and produces a data point every hour that contributes to an average reading.

The first result appears within 12 hours of starting, AEGTEST says, and the reading then updates hourly. The LCD screen shows data for the past 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours, and the stored history reaches back as far as 504 days, so the same unit serves a short look and a long-term record. AEGTEST adds that testing can be restarted at any time.

AEGTEST lists a measurement range of 0.09 to 1000 pCi/L and says the unit switches between pCi/L and Bq/m³. It gives no accuracy figure for this model: the words high-precision and accurate on its page come with no percentage, test level or test period, so accuracy is not stated by the maker.

Power is a built-in battery that AEGTEST says lasts up to 45 days in sleep mode, with a Type-C cable for long-term use at home; AEGTEST calls it ideal for travel. It does not give the battery's capacity or a charging time for the HOUND-1011S.

For warnings, AEGTEST's product page names audible and visual alarms only in its browser title, not in its heading or its product text, which do not describe them. AEGTEST does not say what radon level sets them off, whether you can change that level, or how loud the sound is, so those details are not stated by the maker. AEGTEST's description mentions no app, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth: the readings and the history are read on the device's own screen.

C-NRPP 2024/25
Not included in C-NRPP's 2024/25 evaluation

The Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program's 2024/25 comparison of consumer monitors did not include AEGTEST HOUND-1011S. That is a fact about which devices took part, not a finding about this one: no result from that program exists for it either way.

What is in the box

AEGTEST lists one HOUND-1011S, a charging cable, a lanyard and a manual, and says the detector comes with a stand. The manual is in the box only: AEGTEST posts no copy online, and the general help page of its earlier store answered the question of where to find the instruction guide by asking buyers to contact the company. AEGTEST does not publish the size or weight of the HOUND-1011S.

AEGTEST's warranty page, which covers its store as a whole, promises a three-year warranty, described as a 36-month after-sales service with lifetime technical support. It excludes faults caused by unauthorized disassembly, damage from water or strong mechanical force, and normal wear that does not affect function, says AEGTEST is not responsible for loss of use or incidental damages, and points buyers to AEGTEST's support email for warranty help or repair.

What it costs to run

There is no lab fee and no battery to buy: the built-in battery is recharged with the cable in the box, and AEGTEST rates it at up to 45 days in sleep mode. AEGTEST mentions no app, subscription or cloud service for the HOUND-1011S, and it publishes no sensor life, recalibration interval or service schedule.

Fit and setup

Who it fits, and how to use it

The fit, then setup and placement as the guidance asks

Who it fits

Good fit if, and look elsewhere if

Good fit if

  • You want a small detector to carry between rooms or take on a trip.
  • You want data for the past 12 to 96 hours on the device's own screen, with no app.
  • You want a rechargeable battery instead of disposable cells.
  • You want a warranty term longer than one year.

Look elsewhere if

  • You want a stated accuracy, an operating range or a manual you can read before buying; AEGTEST publishes none of these for the HOUND-1011S.
  • You want a first number within minutes; the first result can take up to 12 hours.
  • You want a monitor that has been through C-NRPP's evaluation; the HOUND-1011S was not included in its 2024/25 round.
  • You need a result for a home sale; check what your state accepts before relying on any consumer detector.

Setup and placement

4 steps

  1. AEGTEST publishes no placement rules for the HOUND-1011S. It says the detector is ready to use at startup with no learning curve and comes with a stand. The general help page of AEGTEST's earlier store, not a page about the HOUND-1011S, gave cautions for its detectors: strong light and humidity can affect reading accuracy, and a new unit can read high at first because it is exposed to radon during final factory testing; the advice there was to blow on the air inlet with a fan for a few minutes to clear the residual radon, then restart the measurement.
  2. The EPA's guidance for any home radon test fills the gap: test on the lowest lived-in level of the home, in a room used regularly but not the kitchen or bathroom, at least 20 inches above the floor, and away from drafts, high heat, high humidity and exterior walls.
  3. For a decision about fixing your home, C-NRPP's advice for any consumer monitor is to place it in a room occupied at least 4 hours a day, test for a minimum of 3 months, preferably in the heating season, and decide on the long-term average; with less than 91 days of data it recommends a follow-up long-term test. The EPA's guidance is to fix a home at 4 pCi/L or more and to consider fixing between 2 and 4 pCi/L.
  4. The HOUND-1011S keeps up to 504 days of history, and AEGTEST rates its battery at up to 45 days in sleep mode, so a test of three months or more means keeping it on its Type-C cable for long-term use at home, as AEGTEST suggests, or recharging it along the way.

How C-NRPP says to use any consumer monitor

  • Leave it in place for at least three months, ideally through the heating season, when indoor radon tends to be highest.
  • Put it in a room someone uses for at least four hours a day.
  • Decide about fixing your home from the long-term average, not a single day or week.
  • If you can only run a monitor for less than 91 days, follow up with a long-term test.

For where any radon test or monitor should sit in a home, see where to place a radon test.

Questions

Questions people ask

6 questions about the AEGTEST HOUND-1011S, answered

Asked about the HOUND-1011S

Who makes the HOUND-1011S?

AEGTEST, which sells it on its own online store. The store's own record gives Shenzhen, Guangdong, China as its location and prices in US dollars, and lists the United States among the countries it ships to. The AEGTEST trademark is registered in the US to Shenzhen Xunyi Electronic Commerce Co., Ltd., with radon detectors among the goods it covers.

How accurate does AEGTEST say the HOUND-1011S is?

AEGTEST gives no figure. Its page calls the sensor high-precision and its readings fast and accurate, but names no percentage, test level or test period.

There is no independent result either: the HOUND-1011S was not included in C-NRPP's 2024/25 consumer monitor evaluation. That is not a failed test; it means no independent result exists.

How is it different from the HOUND-1011?

In AEGTEST's store text the two share a high-precision semiconductor sensor, the 0.09 to 1000 pCi/L range, hourly updates, up to 504 days of history and a battery of up to 45 days in sleep mode. The HOUND-1011S gives its first results within 12 hours and shows data for the past 12 to 96 hours; the HOUND-1011 gives its first results within 6 hours and shows data for the past 6 to 96 hours.

Can it show Bq/m³ instead of pCi/L?

Yes. AEGTEST says the HOUND-1011S supports switching between pCi/L and Bq/m³ units.

Can I read the manual before buying?

Not from AEGTEST's website: there is no manual, data sheet or specification sheet at any public address, and the general help page of its earlier store told buyers looking for the instruction guide to contact the company. A printed manual is in the box.

What colors does it come in?

AEGTEST sells the HOUND-1011S in Gray and in White on its own store.
